A Healthy Fall Treat for Cats and Dogs

Fall is in the air — and that means pumpkin everything! While you might be sipping on your pumpkin spice latte, your furry friend doesn’t have to miss out on the seasonal fun. With this simple homemade Pumpkin Cookie Recipe for Pets, you can whip up a batch of healthy, pet-friendly treats made from real ingredients.

Why Pumpkin is Great for Pets

Pumpkin isn’t just a festive favorite — it’s actually fantastic for your pet’s digestion. Packed with fiber, vitamin A, and antioxidants, pumpkin helps support a healthy gut and immune system for both cats and dogs. It’s a low-fat ingredient that’s gentle on sensitive stomachs, making it an ideal treat base.

The Recipe

This recipe makes about 20 biscuits — plenty to share and store for later!

Ingredients:

  • 55g grated carrots
  • 60g unsweetened applesauce (must not contain xylitol or birch sugar — these are toxic to pets)
  • 145g canned pumpkin (or pure pumpkin purée)
  • 160g rice flour
  • 25g oats
  • 20g plain flour (for rolling)

Instructions:

  1. Before you start, preheat your oven to 300°F.
  2. Blend the grated carrots, applesauce, and pumpkin together until smooth. You can use a food processor, blender, or whisk — just make sure the texture is even.
  3. In a bowl, mix the rice flour and oats, then add your blended pumpkin mixture to form a dough.
  4. Lightly flour a clean surface, roll the dough out to about ½ inch thick, and get ready for the fun part — cutting out shapes!
  5. Use your favorite cookie cutters (bones, pumpkins, or paws) to cut about 20 cookies.
  6. Place them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper or non-stick foil. Bake for 12 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  7. Allow to cool completely before serving — and remember, freeze any extras for later!

Store extra cookies in the freezer for up to three months — your pet will love having a special treat ready whenever they’ve been extra good!

A Few Quick Tips

  • These treats are healthy, but moderation is key.
  • Always check ingredient labels for hidden sweeteners or additives.
  • Break larger cookies into smaller pieces for cats or small dogs.
