Summer in New Hampshire brings beautiful weather, perfect for long walks, hikes, and playtime in the sun. But as temps rise, so does the risk of heat exhaustion for our furry friends. Dogs can’t sweat like humans do — which means they’re more vulnerable to overheating, especially during outdoor activities.

At Top Dog, our professional walkers know how to keep pets cool, hydrated, and happy — even on the hottest days. Here’s what we recommend to keep your dog safe in the summer heat:

1. Avoid Midday Walks

The sun is strongest between 11 AM and 3 PM. Try to schedule walks in the early morning or after dinner when sidewalks are cooler and the sun is less intense. If you use our walking services, rest assured we always consider the forecast and adjust walk times as needed.

2. Protect Their Paws

Blacktop, pavement, and sand can burn sensitive paw pads in minutes. A good rule: if you can’t walk barefoot on it, your dog shouldn’t either. We stick to grassy areas and shaded trails whenever possible, and we check the pavement temp before every walk.

3. Hydration Is Everything

Make sure your dog has access to clean, cool water at all times. Our walkers carry portable water bottles and collapsible bowls for longer walks or mid-day visits — because hydration can make or break a summer outing.

4. Stick to the Shade

NH has plenty of wooded trails and shaded neighborhoods — perfect for keeping walks enjoyable and safe. Whether we’re walking around Manchester, Concord, or the Seacoast, we plan our routes around shady spots and avoid wide-open asphalt whenever possible.

5. Never Leave Dogs in the Car

Even for “just a minute.” On an 80° day, a parked car can reach 100+ degrees in 10 minutes. It’s dangerous and illegal in many states, including New Hampshire. Leave your pup at home or bring them inside with you.

6. Know the Signs of Overheating

Keep an eye out for:

  • Excessive panting or drooling
  • Bright red gums or tongue
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Wobbling or collapse

If your dog shows any of these signs, get them into shade, offer water, and contact a vet immediately.
