Is your daily dog walk starting to feel more like a full-body workout?
If your pup treats the leash like a tow rope, you’re not alone. Many dogs, especially young or energetic ones, pull on walks simply because they’re excited—or haven’t been taught otherwise.
At Top Dog, our walkers are trained to handle all kinds of leash personalities, and we’ve picked up a few tricks along the way. Here’s how you can help your dog develop better leash manners—so you can both enjoy your time outside.

Why Dogs Pull on Leash
Dogs pull for the same reason we rush through the grocery store: they’re excited, overstimulated, or just eager to get somewhere. But without structure, they’ll keep tugging ahead—because they think that’s how it works.
Training Tips to Rein It In
1. Use the Right Gear
Sometimes it’s not just the dog—it’s the leash or harness. Front-clip harnesses or head halters can help reduce pulling without causing pain. (Avoid choke chains or prong collars unless guided by a professional trainer.)
2. Reward Calm Walking
Every time your dog walks by your side without pulling, reward them! Use treats, praise, or a favorite toy. This teaches them that good things happen when they stay close.
3. Be a Tree
If your dog pulls, stop walking. Don’t yank back. Stand still like a tree until your dog checks in or returns to your side. Only then should you continue.
4. Switch Directions
Catch your dog’s attention by changing direction when they start to pull. This keeps them mentally engaged and teaches them to pay attention to your movements.
5. Keep Sessions Short
It’s okay if your walk becomes a training session. Start with just a few minutes of focused walking, then build up as your dog improves.
