There’s nothing like a sunny day on the sand—with your furry friend by your side. But before you load up the cooler and leash up the pup, there are a few things every pet parent should know to keep beach days safe, fun, and stress-free for everyone.

1. Check If the Beach is Dog-Friendly

Not all beaches welcome dogs, and those that do often have specific rules. Before you go, double-check:

  • Leash laws (many require leashes at all times)
  • Time restrictions (some allow dogs only in early morning or late evening)
  • Waste station availability (always BYOB—bring your own bags)

Pro tip: Even if it’s allowed, make sure your dog is comfortable with sand, waves, and strangers before letting them roam.

2. Mind the Heat—Especially the Sand

Hot sand can burn your dog’s paws in minutes. If it’s too hot for your bare feet, it’s too hot for theirs.

Bring:
✔ A towel or blanket for them to rest on
✔ A beach umbrella for shade
✔ A collapsible bowl and plenty of fresh water

3. Know the Water Risks

Even strong swimmers can get caught in waves or riptides. If your dog isn’t used to the ocean, don’t force it—and never let them swim unsupervised.

Avoid:

  • Strong currents
  • Rough surf
  • Drinking saltwater (can cause vomiting and dehydration)

Consider:
A doggy life vest, especially for smaller breeds or first-timers.

4. Protect Them from the Sun

Yes, dogs can get sunburn too—especially light-colored pups and those with thin coats. Apply pet-safe sunscreen to:

  • Nose
  • Ears
  • Belly

And don’t forget: shade and hydration are your best defense against heatstroke.

5. Rinse and Repeat

Sand, salt, and bacteria can irritate your dog’s skin and paws. After beach time, rinse them off with fresh water, and make sure ears and paws are clean and dry.
