As spring arrives and gardens burst into bloom, it’s the perfect time to enjoy more time outdoors with your pets. But before you let your furry companions sniff, nibble, or lounge near your flower beds, it’s important to know that not all springtime beauty is safe for dogs.
In fact, several popular spring plants are highly toxic to pets—and many pet parents don’t even realize it.
Here are six spring plants that are poisonous to pets, including symptoms to watch out for and how to help keep your dog safe:
1. Azaleas
Beautiful but deadly. Even a few leaves can cause vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, and—in severe cases—coma or death. Azaleas are part of the rhododendron family and should be kept well out of reach of pets.
2. Tulips
Tulip bulbs contain toxic compounds that can lead to mouth irritation, excessive drooling, nausea, and even heart problems in severe cases. Dogs are especially at risk if they dig up bulbs and chew on them.
3. Daffodils
These sunny yellow blooms contain lycorine, a chemical that can trigger vomiting, abdominal pain, and even cardiac arrhythmias. The bulb is the most toxic part, but any ingestion can be dangerous.
4. Crocus
Spring-blooming crocus varieties can cause mild stomach upset, but autumn crocus is far more dangerous. Since they look similar, it’s safest to keep pets away from all crocuses to be sure.
5. Hyacinths
Like tulips, hyacinths are members of the lily family and their bulbs can be especially irritating. Symptoms include severe drooling, vomiting, and diarrhea—especially in curious dogs who love to dig.
6. Irises
While not as deadly as others on this list, irises can still cause drooling, vomiting, and lethargy when ingested. The rhizomes (root-like underground stems) are the most toxic part.

What to Do If Your Dog Eats a Toxic Plant
If you suspect your dog has ingested any part of a toxic plant, call your veterinarian or a 24/7 poison control center like the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Line (888-426-4435) immediately.
Prompt action can make all the difference.
