Hot days happen—even in New England. Here’s how to keep your pup safe and comfortable.
We may not hit triple digits like the southern states, but New Hampshire summers can still get toasty—especially for our four-legged friends. Whether you’re heading out for a walk, a hike, or just hanging in the yard, it’s important to keep your dog cool, hydrated, and safe from seasonal hazards.
At Top Dog Pet Sitting & Dog Walking, we spend a lot of time outside with pets, and we’ve learned what works (and what doesn’t) when it comes to warm-weather dog care.
1. Hydration, Hydration, Hydration
Always bring water when you’re out and about—even on cooler summer days. Dogs don’t sweat like we do, so overheating can sneak up fast.
Tip: If your dog isn’t big on drinking from a bottle, try a collapsible water bowl or dog-specific travel bottle.
2. Check the Pavement
If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws.
Even when the air feels pleasant, asphalt and sidewalks absorb heat. Stick to grassy areas or walk in the morning or evening when surfaces are cooler.
3. Keep Walks Short & Sweet on Warmer Days
A quick potty break and some sniffing time is often enough when it’s warm. Save the longer adventures for cooler days or shaded trails.
(Pro tip: We love early morning walks for both the quiet and the cool!)
4. Watch for Signs of Heat Stress
Excessive panting, drooling, or sluggish behavior are all red flags. If your dog seems off, take a break in the shade and offer water.
Know your breed—flat-faced dogs like pugs and bulldogs can overheat faster than others.
5. Never Leave Your Dog in the Car
Even in New Hampshire, even with the windows cracked, the inside of a parked car can become dangerous within minutes. It’s just not worth the risk.
Bonus Tip: Trust the Pros When You’re Away
If you’re working long hours or heading out of town, let Top Dog keep your pup safe, happy, and exercised. We adjust our visits based on the weather—shorter midday walks, extra water refills, and indoor play when needed.
